Los Angeles LAX · Terminal 7, Gate 71A · Airport Lounge · Family Travel · Free With United Club Access
The first few times I used the United Club at LAX, I was on my own, and I mostly cared about a quiet seat and a glass of wine before a flight. Then on one of our California trips I brought Vika and the kids up that escalator, and everything changed the moment Josh found the outdoor terrace. He absolutely loved it out there, planes pushing back directly below, ground crews loading bags, warm LA air instead of recycled terminal air. Emily was happy just sitting outside in the weather, and while the kids were out on the terrace, Vika enjoyed a glass of wine and I had a beer before the flight. That terrace is the reason I now tell people to build a little extra time into their departure day at LAX.
This article is not sponsored. My lounge access is my own, and we didn’t tell United we were going to write about them.
The Walk In at Gate 71A

The club sits right at Gate 71A in Terminal 7. On my most recent visit there was a short line at the entrance, which the staff told me is not typical, and every other time I have been through it has been exactly that, walk up, scan your boarding pass or membership, and you are through in seconds. From there you take an escalator up, and when you reach the top the space opens up immediately.

The first thing you notice is the light. There are windows on essentially all sides of the room, and during the day the sunlight just floods in. It does not feel like a typical airport lounge. It feels open. And the views are genuinely good. You can watch planes moving along the taxiways, and depending on where you sit, you can see one of the active runways with aircraft landing and taking off. If you are a plane spotter, this is your lounge.

Want to see the whole club before you go? Here is the full walkthrough, the layout, the bar, the buffet, and that outdoor terrace, in the order you would actually experience it.
Plenty of Seats, and Power at Every One of Them
Seating in the first room gives you options. Comfortable lounge chairs when you just want to decompress, high top tables if you want to work standing up, and toward the back, small four person tables for families or groups who want to sit together. Make a left and you move into a second large space where things get more social, tables for two and four, more lounge seating, and the bar and buffet. At the far end the space narrows into a quieter seating area with fewer people and lower noise, good for a call or just some peace before a long flight.

One detail worth calling out, every seat in this club has its own charging setup, a USB port and a standard outlet. Whether you are topping off your phone or keeping a laptop alive through a long layover, you are covered without hunting for a plug. The Wi-Fi is strong too, at least it was every time I connected. For a work stop between flights, this club quietly does everything right.
The Bar Is Free, the Food Is Fine
The bar wraps around to the right in the second room, and most things there are complimentary, beers, wines, and the well cocktails. On the family trip, Vika had a glass of wine and I went with a beer before our flight, which is exactly the kind of small moment that makes lounge access feel worth it. If you want a beer to take the edge off a delay, that is covered at no extra charge too.

The food I will be honest about. I was there at lunch and the spread was sandwiches, pita, salad, and cookies. I grazed, and nothing really stuck with me. It is the standard United Club spread, not a restaurant and not trying to be one, but solid enough that you will not board hungry. There are also multiple coffee machines, a Coca-Cola Freestyle machine, which is a nice touch for the non drinkers, and a separate refreshment station along the back wall with tea, water, gummy bears, and chocolate covered pretzels for when the main buffet area gets crowded.

The Outdoor Terrace Is the Reason to Come Early
And then there is the part of this club that sets it apart from just about every other United Club I have visited, the outdoor terrace. It is an open air space where you can sit outside, feel the warm LA air, and watch the ground operations directly below you, baggage being loaded, jets pushing back, flights arriving and departing. It is genuinely one of the better airport views I have seen in any lounge.
This is the part Josh loved most, and honestly, I get it. Most lounges give you a window. This one lets you sit in the open air with a drink while a widebody pushes back underneath you. Emily was perfectly content just being outside in that weather. If you have a kid who is even slightly into planes, this terrace alone justifies the visit.
The Stuff the Camera Misses
A few things you will not fully get from a video. First, there are no showers in this club, so if you are landing off a long haul and hoping to freshen up, this is not the place for it. Second, even when it is busy it never felt super noisy to me, because the spaces are spread out enough that the crowd never piles into one room. Third, one honest quirk of all those windows, when it is really hot out and the sun is high, it does get a bit warm inside. The air conditioning keeps up, but you will feel the difference between a window seat and one further in.
Two more practical notes. There is a departure and arrival board on the wall near the snack station, so you can keep an eye on your gate without checking your phone every five minutes. And there is a customer service desk right inside the club, so if you have a delay or a rebooking situation, you do not have to leave the lounge to find an agent. That is a genuinely useful perk when things go sideways.

How You Actually Get In
Access comes down to a United Club membership, a United Club credit card, a one time pass, or Star Alliance Gold status on an international itinerary. The rules around memberships and one time passes have changed recently, passes now come with a three hour entry window before departure and cannot be shared, so I would check united.com for the current fine print before you count on getting in. One thing worth knowing as a longtime United flyer, domestic Premier status by itself does not get you through the door. I cover the details in the questions at the bottom of this article.
Would It Work for the Family?

Honestly, yes, with a caveat. We did this one as a family of four and it worked. Josh had the terrace, that is him at the counter after dark with the whole ramp lit up below, Emily had the weather, Vika had her wine, I had my beer, and everyone had a charger. If your kids love planes and window seats, this club is going to be a hit. The caveat is toddlers. The space is comfortable but it is not built for kids who need to run, so if you are traveling with little ones who cannot sit still, temper your expectations. Best suited for adults, couples, and families with older kids who can sit and enjoy the environment.
The Verdict
Great light, real runway views, a complimentary bar, power at every seat, strong Wi-Fi, and an outdoor terrace my son fell in love with. The food is fine rather than memorable, and there are no showers, but neither one changes the math for me. I have spent time in United Clubs across the network, from the clubs at IAH in Houston to our home base at O’Hare to Newark’s Terminal A club, and that terrace puts LAX in a category most of them cannot touch. It does exactly what a good airport lounge should do. It makes your time before the flight comfortable and worth showing up early for. If I am flying United out of LAX, I am building terrace time into the schedule.
Questions People Ask About the United Club at LAX
Does the United Club at LAX have showers?
No. There are no showers in this club. If a shower is a must after a long flight, this lounge will not solve that for you.
Can I buy a day pass?
Yes. United sells one time passes, currently $59, through the United app or at the door, and you need a same day Star Alliance boarding pass. The newer rules give you a three hour entry window before departure and passes cannot be shared, so check united.com for the current terms before you buy.
Does my United Premier status get me in?
Not on a domestic itinerary, and I say that as someone with status. Premier Gold and above works only on qualifying international itineraries. For everyday domestic flying you need a membership, a United Club credit card, or a one time pass.
Can I bring my kids in?
It depends on how you get in. The United Club credit card membership allows one adult guest plus dependent children under 18, which is how a family of four makes this work. Individual memberships and one time passes are much more restrictive on guests, so check the terms for your specific access before you show up with the whole crew.
Does Priority Pass work at the United Club?
No. United Clubs do not accept Priority Pass, at LAX or anywhere else.
